Where Tradition Meets Design
At Khaat Studio, we believe that great craftsmanship begins long before a product is finished.
It begins with an idea, a material, a pair of skilled hands, and a deep respect for the craft.
Our journey into craftsmanship is led by Rishabh and Prem, who work as designers and creative guides, collaborating closely with artisans to transform traditional Indian techniques into products that feel beautiful, relevant, and timeless.
We don't see ourselves as people who simply design a product and hand it over to an artisan.
We believe in designing together.
We bring the idea, the form, the proportions, and the contemporary perspective. Our artisans bring something equally important — years of knowledge, instinct, patience, and craftsmanship passed down through generations.
Together, something new is created.
The Hands Behind Every Piece
India's craft traditions are incredibly diverse.
In different corners of the country, artisans have learned to work with whatever nature has offered them — bamboo, cane, clay, jute, wood, cotton, terracotta, metal, natural fibres, and many other materials.
A material that may appear simple in its raw form can become something extraordinary in the hands of someone who truly understands it.
That's what fascinates us.
A strip of bamboo becomes a beautiful lampshade.
A lump of clay becomes a sculptural object.
A bundle of jute becomes a functional piece of home décor.
A piece of wood becomes furniture with character.
Our job is to help these materials tell their stories in new ways.
Bamboo Craft
From a Simple Stem to Something Extraordinary
Bamboo is one of the materials closest to our hearts.
Lightweight, versatile, natural, and incredibly expressive, bamboo has been part of Indian craftsmanship for generations.
When we work with bamboo artisans, the process often starts with understanding the natural character of the material. Its curves, texture, thickness, and flexibility all influence what can be created.
Rishabh and Prem work with artisans to develop forms that bring traditional bamboo techniques into contemporary spaces — from pendant lamps and lighting pieces to baskets, furniture, organizers, and decorative objects.
The challenge is not to hide the natural character of bamboo.
The challenge is to celebrate it.
We allow the material to remain visible — its texture, its natural variations, and the subtle differences that remind you that it wasn't produced by a machine.
Every bend and weave carries the touch of the maker.
Clay & Terracotta Craft
Shaped by Earth and Fire
Clay has an entirely different language.
It begins as something soft and almost shapeless. With the hands of an experienced artisan, it slowly takes form. Then comes the transformation through drying and firing, where earth becomes something strong and enduring.
We love the honesty of clay.
It doesn't need to pretend to be perfect.
The tiny variations in texture, the subtle changes in colour, and the marks left during the making process are part of its beauty.
Our design process explores how traditional clay and terracotta craftsmanship can be expressed through contemporary lamps, décor, vessels, planters, and artistic pieces.
We work with artisans to experiment with shapes, proportions, finishes, and functionality while respecting the techniques that make the craft authentic.
The result is not mass-produced perfection.
It is handmade character.
Jute Craft
A Humble Fibre With Endless Possibilities
Jute is another material that inspires us deeply.
Simple, natural, and incredibly versatile, jute has traditionally been used for everyday purposes. But when combined with thoughtful design and skilled craftsmanship, it can become something much more.
We explore jute through baskets, storage pieces, décor, lamps, organizers, and other lifestyle products.
The texture of jute gives every piece a warmth that manufactured materials often struggle to recreate.
Our approach is to keep the material's natural personality while designing products that fit effortlessly into modern homes.
Rustic when you want it to be. Minimal when you need it to be. Traditional at its heart.
Wood Craft
Every Grain Has a Story
Wood has always been one of the most expressive materials in Indian craft.
No two pieces of wood are exactly alike. Every grain, knot, line, and natural variation gives the material its own identity.
Working with skilled wood artisans allows us to explore everything from furniture and side tables to wall décor, shelves, clocks, frames, and decorative objects.
Rishabh and Prem focus on creating designs that respect the natural beauty of the wood rather than covering it up.
We believe good design should work with the material.
The artisan understands how the wood behaves.
The designer understands how the finished piece should live in a modern space.
Together, they create something that feels both rooted and contemporary.
Cane & Rattan
Woven With Patience
Cane and rattan craftsmanship is a beautiful example of how patience becomes design.
Each weave requires rhythm, precision, and experience.
A skilled artisan can take flexible natural material and create structure, strength, and beautiful patterns through nothing more than their hands and knowledge.
We work with artisans to bring these traditional weaving techniques into chairs, stools, baskets, lighting, storage, and decorative pieces.
The result is naturally warm, textured, and full of movement.
And because every piece is made by hand, small differences become part of its identity.
Brass & Metal Craft
Tradition With a Modern Edge
India's relationship with metal craftsmanship goes back centuries.
Brass, in particular, has been used across Indian homes and traditions for everything from functional objects to decorative and ceremonial pieces.
At Khaat Studio, we explore how traditional metal craftsmanship can be interpreted for contemporary living.
Through lighting, decorative objects, accents, and functional home pieces, we look for ways to combine the richness of traditional materials with clean and thoughtful design.
The goal is not to recreate the past.
It is to carry its spirit forward.
More Than Materials
Bamboo, clay, jute, wood, cane, rattan, brass, terracotta and natural fibres are only the beginning.
India's craft heritage is made up of countless materials, techniques, communities, and traditions.
And we are constantly discovering more.
What excites us most is the possibility of taking something deeply traditional and asking:
“How can this belong in today's home?”
That question sits at the heart of our design process.
Designed by Us. Made by Skilled Hands.
Rishabh and Prem approach every collection with curiosity.
We sketch ideas, explore shapes, experiment with materials, discuss proportions, and work closely with artisans to understand what is possible.
Sometimes our original idea changes completely once the artisan begins working.
And that's okay.
In fact, that's the beauty of collaboration.
An artisan may know a technique we have never considered.
A particular piece of bamboo may suggest a different shape.
A natural variation in clay may inspire a new finish.
A weave may look completely different once it is made by hand.
We don't want to remove those moments.
We want to make space for them.
Handmade Is Not Perfect — And That's the Point
In a world filled with identical products, we find something special in things that are slightly different.
A tiny variation in a weave.
A natural mark in wood.
A subtle difference in clay.
A slight variation in colour.
These aren't flaws to us.
They are reminders that a human being made the piece.
When you bring a Khaat Studio product into your home, you're not just bringing home an object.
You're bringing home the time, skill, patience, and creativity of the person who made it.
Our Craft, Your Home
Our ambition at Khaat Studio is simple but meaningful:
To take India's incredible craft traditions beyond their traditional boundaries and introduce them to people who genuinely value handmade design.
We want an artisan's work to travel further.
We want traditional techniques to remain relevant.
We want natural materials to find a place in modern homes.
And most importantly, we want craftsmanship to be appreciated not just for how it looks, but for the story and human effort behind it.
Because behind every Khaat Studio piece, there is a designer with an idea, an artisan with a skill, and a material with a story.
We simply bring them together.
